Burlington County Fire Chiefs Association

It is with deep regret we announce the passing of Chief C. Kenneth Anderson, Past Chief of the Delran Fire Company No, 1, Past President of the Burlington County Fire Chiefs Association and President Emeritus of the New Jersey State Fire Chiefs Association.

Chief C. Kenneth Anderson

July 28, 1932 to July 8th, 2011

"Our brother and good friend."

Chief Anderson has been an institution in the New Jersey Fire Service for many years.  He had been very active in so many organizations championing Fire Service Professionalism, Safety and Education.  It is hard to overstate the impact that Ken has had on the Fire Service, not only in New Jersey but in the entire country.

History and Accomplishments of Chief Anderson

Ken became a Junior member of Delran Fire Company No. 1 in 1948.  He graduated from the Burlington County Fire School in 1949.

He was active in the work of the Company and, after serving as Assistant Chief served as Chief of the Company in 1960 and 1961.  He also served terms as Recording Secretary and President.

Through the years, Ken became a life member and past president of the Burlington County Fire Chiefs Association, the Burlington County Firefighters Association, The Burlington County Fire Police Association, and the Burlington County Exempt Firemen’s Association.

Ken was elected Executive Committeeman from the County to the State Exempt Firemen’s Association.  He ran for state office and was subsequently elected to a two year term as State President.

He was a 50-year member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and its Eastern Division.  For nine years, Ken represented the Eastern on the IAFC Constitution, By-laws, and Resolutions Committee.

Ken was also an active member of the New Jersey State Fire Chiefs Association.  He served on many committees.  He edited the Five Trumpet Journal, the Association newsletter for more than 30 years.  More recently he compiled a bi-weekly e-mail newsletter, the RELAY.  He also served a two-year term as Association President.  In 2006 he was named President, Emeritus.

When the State Fire Safety Commission was created, Ken was appointed by the Speaker of the Assembly and President of the Senate to the position as representative of a volunteer firematic organization.  Senator Caufield, Commission Chair, appointed him to Chair the Training and Education Advisory Council, a position he held until his death.

After the 9-11 legislation was adopted, Ken was appointed to the statutory position of representative of the State Fire Chiefs Association to the Domestic Security Preparedness Planning Group.

When the Fire Science Technology program was established at Burlington County College, Ken was appointed Coordinator – a position he referred to as “a less than part-time position.”

The Emergency Services Advisory Board selected Ken for its Lifetime Achievement Award In 2008.

On behalf of President James Steel and the members of the Burlington County Fire Chiefs Association, we extend our sympathies to the Anderson Family and the members of the Delran Fire Department.  He will be sorely missed.
