Iron and Steel NYC to ARLINGTON

On August 28th the Fire Department City of New York (FDNY) Fire Family Transport Foundation will be sponsoring a motorcycle run / motorcade from New York City (NYC) to Arlington Va.  This motorcade will be delivering World Trade Center (WTC) steel that will be presented at a ceremony on August 29, 2010. The motorcade is expected to consist of hundreds of motorcycles, FDNY vans, a tractor trailer carrying FDNY unit #343 and a trailer carrying the steel, NJSP vehicles, NJ Division of Fire Safety (DFS) Vehicles and other support vehicles.

This event will be very similar to the Iron and Steel event in August of 2008 when WTC steel was transported to Shanksville PA. and the 2009 event when WTC steel was escorted to Fort Benning GA.  Photos and video of these events are available at www.youtube.com

The travel route thru New Jersey is:

                        Over the Outer Bridge Crossing

Route 440 to N.J. Turnpike South (Middlesex County)

N.J. Turnpike South to Route 195 West

Route 195 West to Route 295 South

                        Route 295 South into Delaware

The motorcade will have 1 fuel stop at the Molly Pitcher rest area on the N.J. Turnpike in Middlesex County. There may be an additional stop at the NJSP in Hamilton to drop off WTC Steel.

FDNY has requested that the fire service of New Jersey have fire units at each overpass and any other safe location (off the highway) to salute the motorcade and the WTC steel as it passes. They have also requested that we arrange to have a fireboat at the outer bridge crossing. WTC steel is very symbolic to the members of FDNY and they care for it with great respect.

The motorcade will depart Brooklyn NY at 0700 hours on August 28, 2010 and should reach the outer bridge crossing at approximately 0800 hours. The DFS will be involved with this event and will broadcast estimate time of arrivals and motorcade location updates over the state coordinators radio channel to the county area commanders.

The deployment of fire recourses to carryout this request and the move up of other recourses for cover assignments (if required) will be done in accordance with the Incident Management System (IMS) and the Deployment Act. This incident is named IRON AND STEEL NYC TO ARLINGTON. Each County Coordinator will operate as a branch director in the IMS i.e.: (Mercer County Branch). All county recourses will be assigned and report to the branch director of the county.

Using the IMS as a coordination tool will allow this incident to also be used as a drill for the deployment of fire recourses. The New Jersey DFS will oversee this deployment drill.

It is extremely important that all unit operating during this incident, operate in a safe manner. NO FIRE APPARATUS OR FIRE DEPARTMENT MEMBERS ARE TO BE ON THE HIGHWAYS during this event

The NJSP is aware of this event and will support the event with police escorts through New Jersey.

The New Jersey Fire Service had a large participation at the previous Iron and Steel events. Our brothers and sisters from FDNY continue to compliment us for the respect and support we have shown in the past.

Additional information on this event is available at www.ironandsteelnyctoarlington.org

Chiefs are requested to look at the overpasses identified in their jurisdiction to determine if personnel and apparatus can safely be positioned there for the event.
